How to Answer 'Tell Me About Yourself' (with Examples)

PPlacementOS TeamCareer Experts·Jun 11, 2026 1 min read 7

"Tell me about yourself" isn't an invitation to recite your life story. It's your chance to frame the narrative.

The Present–Past–Future framework

  1. Present: What you do now, in one sentence.
  2. Past: The experience that got you here and made you relevant.
  3. Future: Why this role is the logical next step.

Example

"I'm a data analyst with three years turning messy datasets into decisions. Before this I led reporting for a fintech startup, where I automated dashboards that cut manual work by 40%. I'm now looking to move into a product-analytics role — which is exactly what this position offers."

Keep it under 90 seconds. Practice out loud until it sounds natural, not memorised.
